Language and Tone

[c]
  • Email language can be less formal than in letters, but ‘texting’ language should not be used. It is acceptable to begin a message with ‘Hi xxx’ or ‘Hello xxx’ and to end the message with something like ‘Best wishes’, ‘Regards’ etc.
  • More formal salutations and complimentary closes, e.g., Dear Xxx, Yours sincerely can be used but are not commonly used.
  • You may be sending a message to someone you don’t know or possibly have only met once or twice. In this case take care not to be overly familiar or humorous.
