Venue and Directions
The workshop is being held in the Wolfson Teaching Room at the Main Libaray of the University of Edinburgh. The training suite consists of a seminar area and a PC cluster which is located on the ground floor of the library on George Square. On arrival at the library, report to the security desk and you will then be directed to the Wolfson suite. Printable maps of the University's campus and Edinburgh's city centre can be found at http://www.ed.ac.uk/maps/central-area/main-university-library/.
Advice for Workshop Delegates
We recommend that you bring some sample data from your own project on a USB memory key, sufficient to demonstrate the diversity of geographical areas, codes, time periods that you are covering. For those of you unable to bring your own data, we will provide some 'real' datasets for you to work with during the practical session.
In addition, if you have not already done so, we would ask that you use your Athens username and password (obtained through your own institution's computing or library services) to register with the Census Registration Service at http://census.ac.uk/Register_start.aspx and follow the instructions provided. If your institution has moved to using federated access management and does not issue Athens IDs, use the Alternative login link on the registration page where you will be directed to your institution's login page. As well as registering as a census user, you will need to accept the special conditions concerning 'Postcode Directories' and '2001 Census: Digitised Boundary Data' for Scotland, and for England and Wales in order to access these datasets during the workshop.
Use of PCs and Laptops
Whilst you are welcome to bring your own laptop for making notes etc., in order to ensure consistency of network access and compatibility of software, we will be running the workshop sessions on the computers in the training suite. Please note that we will not have time during the workshop to support network connectivity or software on delegates' own laptops.
