Venue and Directions

The workshop is being held in the training suite at the Cathie Marsh Centre for Census and Survey Research (CCSR) at the University of Manchester.  The CCSR training suite consists of a seminar area and a PC cluster and is located on the second floor of Crawford House at the University's campus in the centre of Manchester. To enter CCSR, use the entrance door below the bridge in Booth Street East and follow the signs to the second floor. Advice for Workshop Delegates

We recommend that you bring some sample data from your own project on a USB memory key, sufficient to demonstrate the diversity of geographical areas, codes, time periods that you are covering. For those of you unable to bring your own data, we will provide some 'real' datasets for you to work with during the practical session. In addition, if you have not already done so, we would ask that you use your Athens ID (obtained through your own institution's computing or library services, see http://census.data-archive.ac.uk/athensh.asp) to register with the Census Registration Service at http://census.data-archive.ac.uk/register_start.asp. Please use the 'Special Conditions' link (under the Using Data section on the left navigation menu) to register for the '2001 Census: digitized boundary data (England and Wales)' and 'Postcode directories' datasets.

Uses of PCs and Laptops

Whilst you are welcome to bring your own laptop for making notes etc., in order to ensure consistency of network access and compatibility of software, we will be running the workshop sessions on the computers in the PC laboratory at the CCSR. Please note that we will not have time during the workshop to support network connectivity or software on delegates' own laptops.
