Project Websites

[c]

Project websites are areas of the website that are accessible only to members of the research project team (intranet).  Amongst other things, they can be used to share current information and as an archive for project-related information such as the grant application, budget, meeting notes etc. They can also be combined with a number of other tools such as discussion boards, blogs etc.

Problems with project websites include:

  • Intranets aren’t always able to be opened up to colleagues outside the institution
  • Branding by the host institution can be an issue for the other institutions if involved in a consortium
  • Too many administrators can be problematic
  • A single administrator can mean delays in relevant information being uploaded

If you are planning to use a project website to share information about a project, consider where the website will be hosted during project planning and allocate expenditure accordingly. The host institution should be able to:

  • remove branding
  • allow reader access to other institutions
  • provide translation services
  • not obliged to run translation in parallel if not needed.

For larger projects, consider more people with admin access to upload files, but limit this as much as possible.
