The degree of involvement of funders will vary. If the project parameters are clearly defined before the start of the project, they may be very hands-off during the project.

It may also vary during the course of the project. In contrast, other funders may be very hands-on, to the point where they may appear to be an undue influence or interference in the outcomes of the project, or be hampering the progress of the project.

Some funders prefer to be involved on Advisory Boards or alternatively request regular reports. It is important to remember that accountability is not necessarily any weaker with a funder that is hands-off.
