Managing Research Projects

Additional Points

[c]
  • Every externally-funded research project will be governed by a legally binding agreement, entered into by all parties, including funding bodies and all partner organisations
  • All researchers should be fully aware of the nature of the agreement, particularly the details relating to the obligations for delivery of outputs, timescales, confidentiality provisions, reporting, IP management, ethical and governance requirements, and any other provisions that will support the management and resolution of difficult situations that may arise
  • While relationships between researchers may work very well on a fairly informal basis, particularly if researchers know each other personally and have a track record of working together, everyone must also understand that a formal framework also underpins that project and defines all obligations of those involved
  • It is of paramount importance to maintain good relationships, open and constructive dialogue and reporting throughout the project, so that any issues and potential difficulties can be identified early and resolved effectively
  • Projects may involve many different stakeholder organisations, some of which may be culturally and politically very different, and geographically very isolated
  • Effective communications and project management structures will be very important to maintain engagement. The Communication Systems section of this resource also contains useful information on this topic.
