How Do You Manage Professional Development as a Research Team Leader?

The Research Team Leader will also have plenty of opportunities for professional development in his/ her role as Research Team Leader. These resources should provide a useful starting point for reflection on some aspects of the role. The institution is also likely to offer a whole host of workshops and other development opportunities relating to management and leadership.

Additionally it may be useful to seek out opportunities to network with other Research Team Leaders within the Faculty. Talking to other people in the same situation can be reassuring and will often yield a whole host of alternative strategies, ideas, tips and advice. After all, they are likely to be facing similar issues and dilemmas!

It can also be very insightful for the Research Team Leader to seek feedback from other members of the team on how they are doing. Strategies for this might include:

1. Stop/Start/Continue

  • What would you like me to STOP doing, that I do?
  • What would you like me to START doing, that I don’t already do?
  • What would you like me to CONTINUE doing, that I already do well?

2. 360 degree feedback

Some institutions offer 360 degree feedback, which provides a structured way of eliciting feedback from a range of colleagues.
