Neville’s life was cruelly disrupted and changed with the sudden death of his mother when he was 18. Happening as it did in his first year at FE college he struggled to pick up the pieces of ‘normal life’ and found himself retreating socially and struggling to find his role in the changed spaces within his family. This quest became even more difficult when his father, with whom he enjoyed an increasingly close and supportive relationship, remarried. He generously accepted this change, however, ultimately wanting whatever made his father happy. Neville’s determination to succeed and excel in education has both provided a focus in his life as well as a reason, at times, to disengage from his social world. Friendships have been important to him but have been difficult to maintain. Extended family networks have been key sources of advice and practical support and to a lesser extent emotional support. Lack of success in finding employment meant an extended period of education, and some frustration with his continued student identity. Neville has been hungry to establish his own independent adult life, especially since his father, sister and friends have formed new family units that, while attached to and involved with, he feels separate from. Living with a physical disability has made Neville more determined to succeed, and success for him has been linked to finding work and love. After a period of unemployment he secured a job in IT, a development which has given him a greater sense of worth and independence.
