Doing things properly was the keynote of Nancy’s unfolding story of social reproduction in a rural context. Unlike a majority of her rural peers, Nancy’s version of traditional femininity and settled heterosexuality involved considerable geographical mobility within the wider communities of the region her parents settled in when she was young. Nancy laid little store by an educational pathway and, despite succeeding at GCSE level, she left 6th form within the first few months, temporarily kicked against her close relationship with her family and moved in with an older man. This deviation from an otherwise conformist pathway was short-lived and, by 18, Nancy’s tale was one of growing inclusion within the rural establishment. Hers is a strangely old-fashioned story of traditional values at work (a farmer’s cooperative), home (a village increasingly comprised of second homes) and play (volunteering as a Special Constable, and the pubs, restaurants and dinner parties of three counties) with a slight modern twist: her love for computing; and a boyfriend that opened up the good life of fine wines, young men cooking fine food and pop bands. At 20, Nancy was preparing to marry, having already settled into part-time time work and family life that still revolved around her own parents (who were now ‘grandparents’ to her dog as she waited an outcome from coming off the pill).
