Nam is from a working class Chinese family, but his parents were split up and his mother lives in another country, while he lived with his father. He first appeared as a rather quirky individual, a joker with his peers, who was rather immature for his age, and tended to put down everything around him from education to politics. He has been very critical of the education and work systems, which he felt had failed him. It is possible that his offhand and dismissive attitudes were hiding his own lack of success and perseverance. Although clearly good with technology and computers, Nam was also prone to boredom and laziness. He started various computer courses but his tendency was to drop out and he never finished a diploma in IT, nor achieved his key skills maths and English. Leaving college, he was unemployed for a while, a situation he disliked a lot, but found temporary work with computer games. It took Nam up to his early 20s to become more mature and less of a joker, and find a steady relationship, and eventually work in the retail sector.
