When we first met Maisie, she had recently re-engaged with education, having played truant regularly. Her initial aim to go to university and follow a career in the creative arts seemed unrealistic at first, as the odds were stacked against her. Surrounded by poverty, ill health, crime and low aspirations within her highly localised community, she was taking considerable financial, practical and emotional responsibility for her ailing and increasingly dependent mother and her siblings. Strong bonds with her demanding, crisis-ridden family continued to help derail her education and pull her back from the lifestyle she craved far away from the confines of her community. With few resources to draw on to get there other than her own inner strength, her path was precarious and faltering. Over the course of the study, she maintained a strong work ethic (something she gained from her relationship with her estranged father), holding down several part- time jobs. Largely excluded from the leisure pursuits of her more middle class university peers, she nonetheless drew on all resources the social worlds of work and education provided, developing competences and confidence that motored her social mobility. She completed her university course against the odds and spent a summer finally pursuing the fun lifestyle her responsibilities had barred her from.
