Lauren’s working class family was fairly unique in the deprived estate for being intact and property-owning. This, together with a strong work ethic, car ownership, foreign holidays, home improvements contributed to the strong sense of respectability central to her identity. Her father’s ‘little princess’, Lauren also had a strong sense of sticking up for herself in the face of perceived injustice. She defined herself against her ‘gobby’,‘lad’ sister and looked above her mother to her paternal grandmother as a source of female identity and general advice as a child. The influence of her grandmother – whom she was told she closely resembled and spent as much time as possible with as a child – is evident in the generational voice and language of Lauren’s early rich and detailed stories. ‘Nana’ died just before we first met Lauren but remained a continual theme and touchstone long after Lauren’s mother took on the mantle of being her mentor and friend. Lauren always had a boyfriend, each suiting her life stages: ‘a ‘bad boy’ when she kicked against her parents and school; a ‘nice’ boy when she was trying to get back on track with her school work, career options and family; and (having experienced a controlling person who never supported her in anything) a fiancée who allowed her to do what she wanted, cooked for her and was not sexually demanding. Lauren was a bright pupil and, quite unusually in her area and family, she assumed that education was the path to her future in a profession. However, the resources she had to draw on, together with the instability and turbulence that seemed to surround her, meant this path sometimes faltered and her aspirations had to be adjusted. Nonetheless, she persevered and was studying for a nursing qualification at her last interview.
