Pakistani

Khattab was from a working class Pakistani family and had a passion for playing football when we met him. A determined and confident young man, he wanted to succeed in everything. He was playing for a semi-professional team but was determined to go professional and dreamed of creating a successful team in Pakistan. He was astute enough not to neglect his education and successfully achieved GCSEs and A levels. These stood him in good stead when his football did not progress as he had hoped, and took him into university. Whilst there, unlike many of his peers, Khattab’s involvement in his culture, the Muslim religion, and football increasingly combined to distance him from lifestyle activities such as drinking and girlfriends. Enjoying a good social life with his Muslim house mates, he began to recognise that his football aspirations were not to be and concentrated on his studies, successfully leaving with an economics degree. At the same time his religion became even more important, partly precipitated by the very strong impact the death of a relative, who was not much older than himself, made on him. Family was very important to Khattab, particularly his mother. At 21, he returned home to look for work and a suitable wife. A year later he had achieved his aims, he had a good job, and had married and settled down in his family home with a young woman he had met in Pakistan.
