As one of the younger people in the study, Dawn had only recently begun moving beyond the confines of her home, small village high school and rural community at last interview. For much of the study, relationships and the social life then available to her – in school, the Scouts and discos in outlying rural areas - were her priority. Dawn was never without a boyfriend and the ups and downs in her female friendships were a constant pre-occupation. Achieving in her education tended to take a back seat until a critical point was reached. A big push just before she took her GCSE’s produced positive results, enabling her to travel to 6th form college to do A levels in the closest large town. Here she faltered in her studies but was buckling down in a last-ditched attempt to get to university at last interview. Dawn came from a working class family, not originally from but well known and respected in the village. Her parents’ unhappiness together was a concern for her, as was her mother’s recurring depression – something Dawn also suffered from. Dawn’s mother, herself employed in and undertaking further education, was clearly a strong force propelling Dawn towards a university education and a professional career. From the perspective of a more cosmopolitan college life, Dawn began articulating her difference, contrasting her own liberal values with the racism and narrow-mindedness she associated with her rural community.
