Carol is the oldest in a family of three, comes from a middle class background and has enjoyed the privilege of this in terms of financial support for travel, for gap year, and material goods.  She has lived quite a privileged life and has always socialised with those who were in a similar or more advantaged social position.  She never had any need of a part time job through school or college, although she had a few working holidays abroad. As such, failing her A levels was a shock, particularly as this upset her plans to leave home at the earliest opportunity. With the help and guidance of a family friend, Carol decided on a career within health and social care and returned to FE college to study. Having completed her GNVQ, she secured a university place in London, but left this within the year and took up a place elsewhere the following year. She would like to have her own practice and to work abroad. She travelled and lived in a number of countries over the course of the project and does not envisage living and or working in Northern Ireland in the future. The majority of her school friends have already left the country. Carol was in two long-term relationships but her current boyfriend does not share her desire to live abroad, so she is unsure if it will survive. Carol enjoyed a busy social life with a set who liked to drink and dabble in recreational drugs. At 24, she described her social life as more refined and talked about enjoying the finer things in life. She enjoys eating out at good restaurants, going to the theatre, seeing live bands. She drinks wine now rather than gin, and doesn’t take Ecstasy but will take cocaine the odd time with her boyfriend and his friends.
