Beth lived with her father and older brother after her parents split up. Although not geographically close, she maintained a close relationship with her mother for some time, until this was eroded somewhat by a steady long-term relationship which started taking up most of her time and emotional energy. Originally keen to work with animals, she moved on to getting an art college place with a view to pursuing a career in design. However, this did not work out and she eventually dropped out of the course and took a rather mundane retail job to keep her finances going, in which she remained some time later. Beth appeared in early interviews as a rather waif-like and vulnerable young woman, but partly through her taking domestic and financial responsibility at home, she became much more mature and assertive, although always somewhat afraid of insecurity. After leaving her college course she redefined herself as the sort to be a stay at home mum, and was planning to settle down with her long-term boyfriend, her father and their dog.
